Christmas in Dublin: From pantos and shopping to a Gingerbread Village and Santa Day, The Sandymount Hotel is putting its own spin on the capital’s Christmas traditions.

The Sandymount Hotel in Dublin 4 is adding a distinctly homely touch to Christmas 2026, with a Gingerbread Village made by its own team, festive dining from Friday, 27 November, and Santa Day on Sunday, 6 December. For visitors planning a trip to the capital for shopping, pantomimes or a festive get-together, the hotel offers a chance to make a Christmas occasion part of an overnight stay.

There is something about Christmas in Dublin that makes the city feel different. Grafton Street fills with shoppers and buskers, theatres prepare for their annual pantomimes, the lights come on across the city and families begin working their way through the December traditions that have become part of Christmas itself.

This year, The Sandymount Hotel is adding a few traditions of its own. Trees and lights will transform the hotel from the final week of November, following the conclusion of the Nations Championship fixtures at the neighbouring Aviva Stadium. But the centrepiece of the hotel’s festive display is a Gingerbread Village, made entirely by members of the hotel team.
Each year, staff from different departments put their own ideas into the project, creating individual gingerbread houses complete with icing, sweets and elaborate festive details. The creations go head-to-head in a friendly in-house Christmas competition, with Mageda from Baked Sweets joining the hotel this year as guest judge to choose the winning design.

The village will be on display from the final week of November until the first week of January 2027, with this year’s fundraising supporting a local good cause, the Help Baby Kai Appeal Fund.
As guests make their way through the hotel, the warm, spiced aroma of freshly made gingerbread adds something that no Christmas decoration can quite replicate.
The hotel’s annual Santa Day will take place on Sunday, 6 December, from 2pm to 4pm. Mr and Mrs Claus will visit for an afternoon of children’s games, music from a DJ, face painting and festive movies, with Santa’s letterbox ready for Christmas wishes. Adults can enjoy canapés and mulled wine, while children will have juice, water and chocolate lollipops.

For anyone heading into Dublin for Christmas shopping, a work party, a family get-together or a night out, staying overnight gives the occasion a little more room. The hotel’s seasonal package, The Sparkling Night Away, includes overnight accommodation, Prosecco on arrival, a full Irish buffet breakfast and a late check-out at 2pm. Available to book now for stays from 1 November 2026 to 5 January 2027, it gives guests time to enjoy the city’s Christmas atmosphere before a leisurely start the following morning.

Christmas shopping, Winter Lights, pantomimes, festive concerts, carol services and the much-loved Christmas Eve busk on Grafton Street all form part of Dublin’s December calendar. The nearby RDS will also host festive events including Elf Town, Dublin Loves Christmas and Gifted.
For families looking for traditions that have been around a little longer, the Moving Crib remains one of Dublin’s most unusual Christmas fixtures, having welcomed generations of visitors since the 1950s. Across the city, theatres will once again be packed with pantomimes and seasonal productions as December gets underway.

Then there is the food. From Friday, 27 November, The Sandymount Hotel will begin its festive dining programme, bringing families, friends and colleagues together around the table.
Whether it is a family Christmas outing, a catch-up with friends or an excuse to spend a night in Dublin when the city is at its most atmospheric, The Sandymount Hotel is making Christmas part of the stay, right down to the gingerbread!
