A collection of Christmas-themed attractions will be coming to Smithfield Square in the heart of Dublin from the end of November.

The ‘Twinkle Town’ event, which is to include family-friendly attractions like a ‘Santa Panto’ and a ferris wheel, is being organised by Life Events ltd, who won the tender from Dublin City Council.

The Santa’s Panto event promises to be a high-energy performance suitable for the whole family, with a small gift included for each child.

A ferris wheel will also be available in the fairground area of the event, with an “extra-large” ice rink also being installed in the square for all ages to enjoy.

The spiegel tent is where organisers say the “heart of the action” will take place, with a full line-up of cultural events to be unveiled in the coming weeks.

It promises to “shine a light on local Irish talent, providing a much-needed festive event space for a series of cultural events throughout the Christmas period.”

A spiegel tent is a large, wooden-structured travelling tent decorated with mirrors and glass that usually plays host to entertainment acts.

A ‘Twinkle Tavern’ will also be available on site, offering an array of festive fare to eat and drink, either in the tavern itself or outside in the market space.

Organisers ask that those who can avail of public transport to access Twinkle Town do so, as parking in the area is limited.

The Luas red line’s Smithfield stop is a two-minute walk from the festivities, with frequent bus services like the 4, 39A, 145 and all C-spine routes stopping within a five-minute walk away on the quays.

Attendance will be free for the Christmas market, food and drink stalls, spiegeltent and fairground, with the Santa Panto and ice skating rink requiring a booked ticket, which cost €5 and €18 (for the early-bird rate), respectively.

A spokesperson for the council said it wanted to create a “community focused” Christmas event that would attract families, tourists and younger groups.

“DCC would like the Smithfield area to be designated as a prime destination for festive season tourism which will ultimately drive attendance throughout the holiday season,” they said.

The authority said it would contribute €450,000 towards the delivery of the Twinkle Town Christmas events.

Twinkle Town will run from November 28 to January 4, and tickets for the ice skating rink and Santa Panto are now on sale.
